Queen’s Award winner Cygnet Group visit PlaceEXPO

North West based manufacturers Cygnet Group and Heat Trace have received Queen’s Awards for Export and Innovation respectively. Their success was celebrated at an event during IFB held at PlaceEXPO organised by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The event took place at PlaceEXPO, the property pavilion for the UK’s International Festival for Business (IFB), which is taking place at No 4 St Paul’s Square, Liverpool. The event was arranged to coincide with the IFB’s Manufacturing, Science & Technology week.

Cygnet Group was named winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade and Heat Trace won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation.

Cygnet Group is an export-led manufacturer based in Northwich, Cheshire. Founded in 1974, the company delivers advanced engineering solutions to some of the fastest-growing industries in the world. It manufactures specialist machinery to process technical fibres and fabrics used in the automotive, aerospace and wind energy sectors, and patented safety connectors for the subsea oil and gas market.

In the last three years, family-owned Cygnet Group has exported over 95% of its UK-manufactured machines to 30 countries worldwide. In the same period, the company opened new offices in China and the US, and saw revenues triple to £23m.

CWAC HEAT TRACE AND CYGNET - CopyAt the event managing director for Cygnet Group, Matthew Kimpton-Smith, shared the story of the company’s success as a UK manufacturer competing on a world stage. He revealed how the decision to target some of the fastest-growing niche markets in the world with its British-engineered machinery has meant that, even in times of recession, Cygnet Group has enjoyed considerable growth and international recognition.

Helsby-based Heat Trace manufactures innovative heating cables used in a wide range of industries throughout the world, including oil and gas, petrochemical, food processing, power generation, railway and transportation and automotive.
The company, which is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, was recognised by the Queen’s Awards for breaking new ground in the field of semi-conductor heating elements and self-regulating heating cables.

At the event Heat Trace managing director, Dan Berrisford, considered why innovation is so important to his business and explained how Heat Trace’s commitment to invest in new product research and development is paying off for this trailblazing company and shares his experiences of actively pursuing true business innovation.

International Festival of Business 2014

As Queens Award winners 2014 Cygnet Group were delighted to accept an invitation to present at the International Festival of Business 2014 in Liverpool.

The presentation will be held on Tuesday 24th June 2014 alongside Heat Trace who are also recipients of  a Queens Award this year.



Cygnet Group Celebrates Queen’s Award Success

Specialist engineering company Cygnet Group has been awarded a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise

Established in 1974, Northwich-based Cygnet Group manufactures engineering machinery to process technical fibres and fabrics used in the automotive, aerospace and wind energy sectors, and patented safety connectors for the subsea oil and gas sector.

Cygnet managing director Matthew Kimpton-Smith, said: “It’s a tremendous achievement to receive such a high level of recognition for the hard work we have done globally.

“From senior managers to shop floor workers and our installation teams who represent us throughout the world, this award recognises the efforts of every member of our team.”

Cygnet Group wins the Queen’s Award for International Trade for outstanding overseas sales growth over the last three years, during which it has seen overseas earnings growth of 255% and has almost doubled its number of employees to 97.

Cygnet, which manufactures all of its machinery from its UK base, was recognised for its clear export strategy which comprises 85% of total turnover.  The company has opened new offices in China and the USA, as well as entering a number of other new markets – Africa, Scandinavia and Northern Canada – over the last three years.

Matthew highly commended at IoD National Awards

Cygnet Group MD Matthew Kimpton-Smith has been highly commended by judges in the Institute of Directors (IoD) 2013 Director of the Year Awards, which celebrates the UK’s top businesses and their leaders.

Matthew was awarded the accolade in the Global Director of the Year category, which recognises outstanding performance by UK businesses operating in international export markets.

The award ceremony took place on Friday 11th October in the City of London and was attended by hundreds of the Britain’s top business leaders. It comes a year after Matthew was named Small Business Director of the Year at the IoD’s North West awards.

“For our business to be recognised in this way against such strong competition is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our entire team,” said Matthew.
